selecting Your Next Dslr Camera | Sony Digital Photo Frame
You've had your Dslr now for about 5 years and have gotten the "bug" that it's now time for you to upgrade to one of these new cameras out on the market, be it whether a Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Pentax or Panasonic. You now need to decree whether you want an interchangeable lens full-system Dslr, a fixed-lens Dslr, or an interchangeable lens system. Now where did all these other names come from and what do them mean? Yes, things have changed over the past 5 years when you graduated from your point and shoot or 35mm Slr camera, that's for sure. Let me see if I can clarify some of these new descriptions for you to help you in your "quest" for a new camera:
Full system interchangeable lens - most generally referred to Dslr that allows for the potential to replace one lens with another on a base body. What you're probably already used to if you've had your Dslr for the past 5 years or so. You can go from a wide-angle, general zoom, to one of those super-zoom/telephoto lenses on the same body, providing you have the literal, type lens configuration or adapter.
Fixed-lens Digital Slr - as the name implies, you can't turn the lens and the body uses a non-moving semitransparent mirror.

Interchangeable lens system - uses no mirror, is usually referred to as a "four thirds" camera which reduces the size of the camera. Instead of a mirror, the image is captured on a exiguous display and then processed. This is very similar to those used in video cameras. If you already have a full sized Dslr, this is probably not what you're looking for.
With that out of the way, I would probably want to decree what I want to use the camera for. By this I mean are your just going to shoot family gatherings as well as periodic vacation photos? If so, then maybe you're good off sticking with your current Dslr, but if you're now looking to get some great portrait shots along with scenery photos and some great close-ups, then you probably need something more than what you already have. Do you want to blow up some of those great photos into something more than the standard 4 x 6, possibly into 11 x 14 or maybe even large, then you need something with more than the average 8 megapixels to get the resolution you're going to need. Personally, I would look for something above the 12 mp range since you're going to need that kind of resolution for the larger photos.
You'll need to reconsider how may frames-per-second you're going to want. The lower end Dslr's will shot from 2-4 fps, and the higher end will shoot upwards of 10 fps. If you're going to shoot performance shots, this will in effect come in handy in that you're chances of missing anyone are in effect decreased. Understand also that the higher end Dslr will auto-focus much faster as well. There is a lot of talk going on about which is best; auto-focus in the lens or auto-focus in the body. This will solely depend on the manufacturer, but be advised that you won't be able to see the auto-focus occurring if it's within the camera body and not in the lens. The same will hold true for image stabilization that is now available. You're going to want a camera with very good auto-focus speed and tracking abilities.
Speaking of camera body, do you want the new plastic/composites out there or the more rugged metal bodies, and do you want a camera that is moisture and weather unyielding for the type of photos you're going to be shooting. I'm not referring to underwater photography here, but walking straight through the fields or forest, or even a sporting event will take its toll on a camera that's not weather unyielding (more things to consider).
Of course, you probably know that most of the true Dslr's now shoot video as well. This can range in any place from 24-30 fps, with the lower end shooting at 1,280 x720, and the higher end shooting at 1,920 x 1,080 Hd. You want to look for the potential of hand-operated controls for shooting video as some of the lower end cameras only allow for automatic settings whereas as the higher end allow for hand-operated shutter and aperture settings.
Since you're probably looking to replace your existing camera with a newer one, make sure that you know what the Iso potential of the new camera is. You're going to want one that has a wide range of Iso settings to compensate for the lighting source you're shooting in. Many of the cameras on the market now have an Iso potential in excess of 400, with some going up to 1200 Iso; excellent for catching photos in the nighttime sky or very dark places.
I won't go into lenses here since that can take up two more pages. Just reconsider that there are excellent after-market manufacturers out there and you don't necessarily have to stick with the camera manufacturer; this will hold true especially when you want to get into some of the high end telephoto lenses out there. You only need to be sure the lens will fit onto your camera, and this is usually complete with exact camera/lens adapters.
I think lastly, before you take the plunge and buy the camera, that you buy from reputable dealers. If you're in the process of placing an order and are told that everything is extra, because of the ridiculously low "advertised" price, then you're dealing with the wrong people. There are fullness of places on the internet that rate resellers and you should check them out before you buy.
